Got a pair of P.breidohri in Germany, october 4. 2011. And April 15. 2012 they spawned for the first time.
The eggs where laid vertically on a pretty rough rock, and it took about 3 days before they hatched.
GH: 7 KH: 3 pH: 7,5 Temperature: 26 Celsius.
I keep them in a 750 liter aquarium, together with 2 pairs of Astatheros nourissati and a pair of Tomocichla tuba. This tank is way to small to house all these fishes when they become bigger, but for now it works fine.
Female guarding the fry..
Since the interest for central-American cichlids in Norway is virtually non-existent, i usually don’t put a lot of effort in raising fry of these fishes. This was no exception. The only thing i did was to put in some artemia-nauplii two-tree times a day when the fry was free-swimming – so at least they had something to eat, untill they probably got eaten by the other fishes… i just don`t like to starve any living being, regardless of size or specie.
Anyway, it did not go like i had expected. The parents where doing a great job guarding the fry, and after about 2 weeks i could no longer see any of the other fishes even try to eat the fry. Actually i could see the other fishes got a bit nervous when they – for some reason – got a bit to close to the fry. They had obiously learned by experience!
Time went by and i must say im impressed with this pair – remember that this was their first time!
However, after about two months the male started to flirt with the female again – the fry was getting pretty independent – and the other fishes started to hunt for them – so i then decided to give these little survivers their own tank.
There where 13 left when i moved them… and they where all in good shape. Now let`s hope i can find new homes for them!
